It was a forest reserve for over 100 years and declared as a National Park in 1994 and comprises a total area of 80 sq. km. In 2009 the Indian Ministry of Environment and Forests had declared Gorumara as the best among all the 180 National Parks in India and has been setting a good example for the other National Parks to follow.

The months of November to March is the best time to visit Gorumara National reserve as the weather ranges from 10 degrees to 23 degrees.

- The Gorumara Reserve is open on all days but on certain days, the safari is closed for various reasons which must be enquired before visiting.
- The jungle safari must be done on Jeeps which are registered under the Forest Departments. You cannot choose to take your personal vehicle in, so you must plan accordingly.
- Video camera requires special charges if decided to be carried inside the jungle premises during the safari.
